Yo Everyone~!
Got back from Sakuracon last night, was too tired to write up anything, but after a nice long sleep I feel a lot more better, but still kinda tired haha.
I cant believe that the 3 days just went by so quickly! This was my second time attending a anime convention, first time was in 2010 when Mayumi Tanaka, Noizi Ito, and HaMC came as guests and was AMAZING, i skipped Sak 2011 cuz there wasnt anything that interested me, and finally this year I REALLY wanted to try my hand on Artist Alley, showing my work and getting people to know me. So the past three days was an different experience as I experienced as an attendee and as a artist.
Wed.
After my friends classes, we got together to do a moc Table set-up, we really wanted to present ourselves well for the convention. We met in his architecture room and started setup, it didnt take very long to prepare the things, we only met for about an hour before we all went on our way to finalize our own preparations. We agreed to meeting at 6:45 am friday to do final mock setup of our table.
Thursday.
i met up with my friend and hopped onto the bus that takes us near the convention place to go and pick up our badges. Since it was like our first time we got confused in where to get our badges, it was pretty funny, we were walking around for couple hours before we got our badge for artist alley. We entered the exhibition hall to check out our table and we already see some people setting up their table and its AMAZING, quite intimidating. Unfortunetly our other friend who had our PVC pipe for the table couldnt come so we couldnt do any of our setup that day.
Friday
We met at 645am at my friends architecture room to do the final mock up of the table, we were able to get it set up pretty quickly and it looked nice. We were proud. I'll try and put up some pictures. So by 730 we got into our friends car and went to the convention center to set up. We had to have our table set up by 9am for the fire marshal to check for safety, but i didn't see anybody like that coming along and checking. The real deal started at 10am, soon as it was open you can hear the crowd coming in. My table was pretty much consisted of Touhou prints and 20 character keychains. My first sale was a dude who asked if I had a Fujiwara no Mokou print and I pointed out the one I had and he said "I LOVE YOU" and bought the print. And around 12 after couple more print/keychains sold, I had my first Commission...I CANT BELIEVE I FORGOT TO TAKE A PICTURE OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT! I was so happy when she asked me for a commission it was such a nice feeling, but after that I got one more commission that day but that commission was so awesome! The commissioner went around asking other artist around AA to redraw Yotsubato pictures onto his playing mat ---> [link]( i did the one on the top right with Yotsuba and Danbo) . I felt like it was a slow day, but that was no surprise, it was like a day for people to look at what we had. Artist Alley closed at 6pm, I went to meet up with some of my friends to go see the Stereopony concert, if it wasnt for the screechy noise coming from the audio system the concert would of been awesome. That pretty much sums up my first day at Sakuracon 2012.
Saturday
I decided to change the price of my Key-chains from $4 -> $3, so I got to the convention center at 8am to change prices and set up of the table, soon as that was done, i started on working on one someones commission so i can give it to them. 10am the day begun again, but this time with a lot more people, this day, alot of my friends came by my table to buy some key-chains so I was very grateful for their support. i was able to get couple more commission that day too so by the end of the day, I didn't know how much I made that day but I knew that I was able to pass my break even point of $~300. After the Artist Alley, went out to eat friends with my good Artist Alley buddies. We all then just chilled and looked around the convention for a while...till 230am, that night I ended up staying over at my friends place, got about 3-4 hours asleep and went back to the convention center around 9. Surprisingly I wasn't that tired after the short nap, probably because it was going to be the last day of the convention.
Sunday
Waking up around 7, getting breakfast on the Ave then headed out to the convention center, arriving around 9 I just got ready for our last day at artist alley. I was sad that artist alley was only open till 4pm, wish it were longer, i dont know why, but the feeling of just sitting there drawing was really relaxing and exciting. I was able to get couple more commissions that day too which made my day. Each hour that went by I just felt so sad that it was coming to a close. Soon as the annoying announcement dude called out the end of the Artist Alley day, we all did some art trading which was really fun, then we all got together for dinner. YUM YUM.
So yeah I still cant believe that its over and have to wait another year for this excitement.
I learned so much from this event, now I have a year to prepare!
What surprised me the most is that the Rin Okumura keychain sold the most, I only had 2 (out of 22) left after the convention. Also the Laputa print sold the most out of the other prints I had. Will have to think about making that into a bigger print for next time.
I just want to thank everyone who came and visited my booth, bought my stuff, or just chatted about nonsense, it was the best three days of my life. I would like to experience this again.
On another note, If anyone who couldn't make it to the convention and are interested in purchasing any of the Prints/keychains OR want to Commission me!!! just Note me or Email me at Studiolessonguy(a)gmail.com will let you know of whats left and shipping details.
